Turmeric Tea: Benefits & Recipe

Up until a few months ago, I only knew turmeric as the ingredient that made a lot of Indian dishes that signature bright orange colour – I had no idea how many health benefits it held.

Turmeric is found in a flowering plant of the ginger family and can be bought in a powdered form in most grocery and health food stores – it has been found to have a multitude of health benefits for those who ingest it regularly.

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin

It is known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties

I like to consume my turmeric in the form of a home made turmeric tea/latte type deal. Here is the recipe:

Select the mug you are going to use and fill it half with almond/cashew milk, and half with water. The reason for this is because turmeric needs to be mixed with some kind of fat source in order for it to be digested and absorbed efficiently.

Add this liquid to a small saucepan and turn the hob to a medium heat. Add in 1tsp of turmeric, 1tsp of ceylon cinnamon (I’ve done a blog post on the health benefits of ceylon cinnamon so check that out if you’re confused as to why I said that kind specifically!), 1/2 tbsp honey, and a couple cracks of freshly ground black pepper.

Whisk this mixture together well and keep stirring until mixture is hot.

Pour back into the original mug you used and let cool long enough so you don’t burn your tastebuds off.
